Road rehabilitation projects are rarely just about paving a surface. In areas with long-standing drainage, utility, and structural challenges, rebuilding a roadway requires careful planning, coordination, and long-term thinking.
Northam Construction Ltd was awarded the contract to rehabilitate the roadway between Hodges Creek Marina and Paraquita Bay, a key corridor serving residents, businesses, and daily commuters in the British Virgin Islands.

This project was developed as part of a broader effort to improve road infrastructure in the Territory. Rather than a simple resurfacing exercise, the scope addressed the underlying conditions that contribute to premature road failure.
The works involved the removal of the existing asphalt roadway, extensive excavation, and the construction of a new reinforced concrete road designed to better withstand traffic loads and local environmental conditions.
Roadway projects of this nature require multiple systems to work together. Along the Hodges Creek to Paraquita Bay route, works included:
By addressing drainage, utilities, and structural elements together, the project aimed to reduce future disruptions and extend the lifespan of the roadway.
One of the key considerations during the planning phase was the integration of utility infrastructure into the rehabilitation process. Coordinating with water, electricity, and telecommunications providers helps minimise the need for repeated excavation after roadworks are completed.
This integrated approach reflects a growing emphasis on building infrastructure that performs better over time, rather than addressing issues in isolation.
The award of this contract reflected confidence in Northam Construction’s experience delivering civil and infrastructure works. Projects of this scale require not only technical capability, but also collaboration with public agencies, utility providers, and the surrounding community.
Road rehabilitation is a complex process, particularly along well-used routes. Projects like this represent a long-term investment in safety, durability, and improved transportation networks across the Virgin Islands.
